December Recipes from The Kitchen Garden

“From December to March, there are for many of us three gardens –

the garden outdoors, the garden of pots and bowls in the house,

and the garden of the mind’s eye.”

Katherine S. White {1925-1960}

Parsnips baked in Parmigiano, beef in port, garden herbs and pickled walnuts, iced biscuits and cranberry cocktails – all in the latest edition of The English Garden magazine, photographed by Jason Ingram. I am in the last throws of creating the food recipes for the magazine, it has been a two year series and, sadly, it is now coming to an end.

All the photographs for the 2014 recipes were actually created in 2013, so you will still have a chance to subscribe to the magazine for another year if you want to collect all the recipes.

The editor of the magazine, Tamsin Westhorpe, asked for kitchen garden produce to be at the very centre of the articles and styling. It is quite a challenge for December, but I have tried to imagine old favourites that a gardener would have harvested and stored in the shed for mealtimes. Making a simple English garden herb bag from muslin, for example, is an old fashioned way that gardeners can add flavour and seasoning to stews, soups, risotti and sauces.

I hope you enjoy cooking the recipes –  they are simple, frugal, easy and quick.  Let me know how you get on.
