Marlborough Communities Market

Marlborough Communities Market is a new not-for-profit social enterprise scheme, owned and managed by the residents of Marlborough in Wiltshire and the villages around it. It enables new artisanal producers, growers and craftspeople to set up stalls very cheaply {at a cost of just £10} in order to sell their wares to the townfolk on the first Sunday of every month.

The initiative was started by Ellie Gill, who wants to champion local producers and bring the community together. Her endeavours are supported by Transition Network, whose role it is to inspire, encourage, connect, support and train communities as they self-organise around the transition model, creating initiatives that rebuild resilience and reduce CO2 emissions. Transition Marlborough aims to protect the town and the surrounding area from the rising costs of food, energy and transport which are being driven by the global challenges of depleting fossil fuel resources, climate change, and the resultant environmental impacts.

The market opened for the first time on 1st July, when the Town’s Lady Mayor Edwina Fogg cut the inaugural ribbon and the trading began. From cheeses, to charcuterie, fresh meat, foraged greens, teas, olives, breads, mushrooms, plants, flowers, textiles and ice-creams, there was something for everyone across all the price ranges.

The stalls provide an excellent opportunity for consumers to purchase excellent produce at excellent value for money – even a downpour could not stop the buzz, and there is also a café and BBQ sizzling to keep the hunger at bay.

Don’t miss this wonderful initiative, and if you would like to learn more you can go to the website: www.marlboroughmarket.org.ukand www.transitionmarlborough.organd you can also follow the organisers on Twitter: @marlcommunities.
